Boeing 787 aircraft exempted from GAGAN compliance till December 2025

The Civil Aviation Ministry on August 23 exempted Boeing 787 aircraft from GPS-assisted GEO Augmented Navigation (GAGAN) compliance till 2025.

“Boeing 787 aircraft are exempted from GAGAN compliance till December 31, 2025,” the ministry said in a release.

GAGAN (GPS Aided GEO Augmented Navigation) is an Indian satellite based augmentation system implemented to provide necessary navigation guidance to aircraft.

It is jointly developed by AAI and ISRO. This is the first such system developed for India and neighboring countries in the equatorial region. It helps during natural calamities such as floods and earthquakes by sending messages to the affected people.

The main objective of GAGAN is to provide satellite based navigation services with the required accuracy and integrity for civil aviation applications and to provide better air traffic management in Indian airspace.

The system will be interoperable with other international SBAS systems and will provide seamless navigation across regional borders. GAGAN Signal-in-Space (SIS) is available through GSAT-8 and GSAT-10.
