Boxing World Championship: Nishant, Sanjeet in quarterfinals

Nishant beat Marco Alvarez Verde of Mexico 3-2; Sanjeet beat Georgi Chigladze of Georgia 4-1

Indian boxers Nishant Dev (71kg) and Sanjeet (92kg) advanced to the quarter-finals of the AIBA Men’s World Championship after impressive victories in their last-16 leg encounters in Belgrade.

In the late night match on October 31, Nishant defeated Marco Alvarez Verde of Mexico 3-2 to meet Vadim Musaev of Russia.

Last edition’s quarterfinalist Sanjeet defeated Georgia’s Georgy Tchigladze 4-1 to enter the last eight stage for the second time in a row.

He will face Italy’s Aziz Abbes Mohydin.

Later tonight, Rohit Mor (57kg), Akash Sangwan (67kg), Sumit (75kg) and five-time Asian medalist Shiv Thapa (63.5kg) will look to make the quarterfinals.

Rohit will face Kazakhstan’s Serik Temirzanov, while Akash will face Cuba’s Kevin Brown. Sumit will also face a Cuban player in Yoanelis Hernandez.

Thapa will face France’s Lunas Hamraoui.

The gold winners in the showpiece will walk away with prize money of $100,000.

The silver medalists are to be awarded $50,000, and both bronze medalists will be awarded $25,000. The total prize money is $2.6 million.

In the weight categories, India is represented by its current national champions.
