Varanasi : To continue your family monopoly in India mlc (Local Bodies) Varanasi constituency, maintained since 1998, jailed mafia don and MLC Brijesh Singh filed his nomination for the MLC election on Wednesday. His wife and former MLC Annapurna Singh had also filed his nomination for the same seat. Brijesh won this election in 2016 after the completion of his wife’s term.
Deputy District Election Officer and Returning Officer for MLC election Ran Vijay Singh said that two candidates – Brijesh Singh and Annapurna Singh – filed their nomination papers as independent candidates. Earlier, Jai Ram of Lok Dal had filed his nomination on Tuesday.
As per the revised schedule released by the Election Commission of India, the nomination process for the MLC elections will continue till March 19. Scrutiny of the form will be done on March 21. Candidates can withdraw their papers till March 23 while voting will be held on April 9. By counting of votes on 12 April.
Nominations initially began on February 4 with the purchase of forms of Brijesh, his wife and Lok Dal candidate, however the election was postponed in view of the assembly elections.
Brijesh’s brother scrutinizing the records of MLC (local body) election of Varanasi constituency in 1998 Udaynath Singh aka Chulbul Singh had won this seat for the first time and retained it in 2004. In 2010 Annapurna contested the election on Bahujan Samaj Party ticket and won.
In 2012, Brijesh initially tried his luck in the UP Assembly elections by contesting from Sayyidaraja seat in Chandauli district on the ticket of the lesser-known political party Pragatisheel Manav Samaj Party. However, he lost to Independent Manoj Singh W. After winning the election, Manoj joined the SP.
Following these developments, Brijesh decided to contest the MLC elections in 2016 and was expelled from the BSP on charges of anti-party activities for campaigning for her husband Annapurna. When Brijesh entered the fray, the SP tried to repeat the experiment of Sayyidaraja Assembly Election-2012 by fielding Manoj’s sister Meena against it.
However, in 2016 in Varanasi, Bhadohi and Chandauli districts out of 4,257 votes, Brijesh got 3,038 votes while Meena got only 1,084 votes. The BJP, BSP and Congress had refrained from fielding any candidate, while the results also showed that the SP faced the problem of cross voting. With the victory, Brijesh proved his family’s monopoly on the Varanasi seat of the UP Legislative Council.
