Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Sunday cautioned his party colleagues against taking the opposition lightly in the upcoming elections.
Yediyurappa told the BJP core committee meeting in Davangere, “I have a suggestion for all of you. None of you should take the opposition lightly. They have their own calculations and strengths.”
The Lingayat leader claimed that some Congress leaders are in touch with some BJP leaders.
Yediyurappa said, “You need to walk with confidence without giving chance of such incidents (defection). We have to make sincere efforts for BJP to return to power with 140 seats in the next assembly elections.” Chief Minister said here on July 26.
He said that the party can be strengthened by involving BJP leaders from SC/ST and OBC communities.
At the same time, he asked to include a team of 20 to 25 women and leaders of BJP youth wing in the booth level organization.
Shri Yediyurappa also appealed to the party functionaries to take the welfare programs of the Central and State Governments to every household.
He also told the gathering that he would soon undertake a state-wide tour to strengthen the party’s base.
Mr Yediyurappa reminded the core committee members that the BJP has to win both the Hanagal and Sindagi assembly by-elections as its failure would give a wrong signal.
Yediyurappa said, “Here one should not assume that Hanagal and Sindagi are easy grounds.”
Speaking about the recent demolition of the temple at Nanjangud in Mysore, which has been widely criticized, Mr Yediyurappa said that it has been decided not to allow any temple to be destroyed anywhere.
He also said that the BJP government will file a review petition in the Supreme Court seeking “corrections” in the verdict.
Yediyurappa said, “Whatever happened is over now. It will not be repeated. Party workers who are angry should pay attention to it.”
BJP state chief Nalin Kumar Kateel and BJP national general secretary and Karnataka in-charge Arun Singh also addressed the gathering.
In his address, Mr. Kateel took a dig at Congress leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah regarding his criticism of the temple demolition in Nanjangud.
He said that this is one such instance which happened without the knowledge of the government but the Congress government turned a blind eye to the attacks and killings of several BJP workers in Karnataka.
