There were some political guests at the Border Security Force office in Kolkata this afternoon when a group of BJP MLAs led by West Bengal’s Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari visited.
The expansion of BSF’s jurisdiction in the border states has become the new political issue in West Bengal. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have already written to the prime minister Narendra Modi Expressing the displeasure of the State for encroaching upon its jurisdiction. He is expected to meet the Prime Minister next week and take up the issue with him.
The West Bengal Assembly has also passed a resolution opposing the extension of this jurisdiction. Dinhata MLA Udayan Guha made some such remarks on BSF which created controversy. “We have seen the kind of atrocities committed by BSF (personnel) on people. We know how BSF jawans sometimes touch women inappropriately.”
However, later Udayan Guha said that he did not mean to say that BSF is indulging in tampering, it has already done damage.
The BJP took this remark and the attitude of the government to pass a resolution against the extension of jurisdiction in its area and visited the BSF office to express gratitude for the security of the borders.
With flowers in his hands, he went and greeted the BSF jawans. Suvendu Adhikari said, “We are proud of our BSF force. They do a lot for our country and we have come to say sorry to all of you.”
On the other hand, TMC tweeted, “The respect we have for BSF personnel across the country is not something we need to define with lotus and politically motivated speeches! Leader of Opposition, this Border Security Force You could have at least tried not to confuse them as ‘BJP Security Force’!”
