NOIDA: A private firm engaged in the demolition of twin towers has been asked to complete the inspection of all buildings within 50 meters and submit its findings to the Central Building Research Institute.CBRI) this month.
Once CBRI comes out with its suggestions, Noida Authority It will decide whether any additional measures are needed to ensure the safety of buildings near the Twin Towers – Apex and Cayenne.
Amid concerns about structural safety, building Engineering – the Mumbai-based firm that will carry out the demolition – is recording video and taking pictures of the towers at ATS Greens and supertech Emerald Court to look for cracks and other damages. After the two towers have been brought down, these views will be combined with the condition of the buildings to determine whether any additional damage has been caused by the effects of the demolition.
Emerald Court residents are demanding a structural audit of their buildings in the immediate vicinity of the Twin Towers. ,
On Tuesday, the AOA claimed that the Noida authority had directed the developer, Supertech, to conduct a structural analysis of the adjoining buildings and repair any defects, if any, before demolition.
“Yes, the Noida authority has directed Supertech to conduct a structural audit of the adjoining buildings before demolition. We insisted that in case of defects, the work of reinforcement should also be done by the builder. Authority officials agreed to our demand,” said AOA acting president SK Sharma.
However, a media statement issued by the Noida Authority later in the day did not mention anything about the structural audit. Supertech has also denied any such offer. “I am not aware of this development. As the insolvency process is underway, interim resolution professionals appointed by the National Company Law Tribunal are attending the meetings,” said RK Arora, MD, Supertech.
Ishtiaq Ahmed, general manager (planning) at the authority said, “Keeping in mind the concerns of the residents, Edifice will soon submit a report on its inspection to the CBRI.”
So far, Edifice has completed the inspection process in seven towers – four at ATS Greens and three at Emerald Court. Meanwhile, the Noida authority has fixed August 21 as the date for the demolition of the twin towers. The 32-storey buildings will be brought down at 2.30 pm. On May 17, the Supreme Court had agreed to the appeals of Supertech and Edifice and extended the date of demolition from May 22 to August 28. “To ensure compliance of the court order, August 21 has been fixed as the date of demolition. We will get a grace period of one week,” Ahmed told TOI.
Officials said more than 85% of pre-demolition work was finished, such as removing walls, utility pipelines and electrical wiring. Officials said that the work of drilling holes in the pillars to hold the explosives is almost complete, as well as more than 70% of the work related to wrapping the pillars with iron nets and geotextile fabrics.
By June 30, Edifice had also been asked to submit a proposal on how it plans to manage the debris from the demolition, officials said. The debris will be covered from all sides so that the dust emanating from it does not spread over the entire area. The height of the cover will be decided by CBRI after inspection. Edifice will also have to prepare a vibration report by June 20 and submit it to GAIL and CBRI.
