Bureaucrat shares video of rare lion-tailed monkey, internet awestruck

Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Supriya Sahu shared a mesmerizing video of a rare Lion-tailed Macaque on Twitter. The bureaucrat also shared interesting facts about this monkey species.

In this 57-second video, a monkey with shiny black fur is shown sitting on a tree. The lion-like gray mane of the beautiful macaque has taken the internet by storm. The video shows the monkey from different angles, in one shot the monkey can be seen clinging to a tree while chewing something. Monkeys also have big brown eyes.

Along with the video, Ms Sahu called Jeeva enigmatic and stunning. The caption reads, “Mysterious, surprising and somewhat mysterious, lion-tailed macaques are endemic to the Western Ghats. Highly endangered as there are only a few thousand of them left. Habitat conservation is vital to their survival. Here’s a Rare footage. Senthil Natarajan.”

The video was posted a few hours ago and has so far been viewed nearly 3,000 times on Twitter. One user commented, “Thank you for sharing. Hope, the government will consider your suggestion for more habitats for endangered animals.”

Another user commented, “Sad to see the condition of these lion-tailed macaques.. apart from protecting their habitat or afforestation, can we focus on breeding, considering they die every 1-2 Born once in a year? We can plan and work collectively, I will be happy to support the cause.”

A third user wrote, “India needs to protect its animal kingdom from all kinds of vagaries, human or natural.”

Lion-tailed macaque is also known as bearded monkey. The species of monkey gets its name from its long, thin tails, which are furless except for tufts of hair at the end, similar to those of a lion.
