The President of the Confederation of African Football, Patrice Motsepe, said on Monday he was “convinced” of the progress made by Ivory Coast on the next Africa Cup of Nations tour.

“We are confident that the AFCON you organize here will be the best,” Motsepe said after meeting Ivorian President Alassane Outara in Abidjan.

“We are convinced by the various infrastructure you have created to host this competition.

“I am satisfied with the progress made, even though there are still some problems to be solved.”

Ivory Coast is scheduled to host the Cup of Nations in June and July of 2023, just 18 months after the last AFCON in Cameroon earlier this year.

The continental showpiece is returning to the same mid-year slot in which the 2019 Cup of Nations was held in Egypt.

The West African country, which last hosted the tournament in 1984, is building or renovating six stadiums for the competition.

Three are nearly finished: the 60,000-capacity National Stadium in Abimepe, just outside Abidjan, as well as a 40,000-seat venue in the central city of Bouaque, which has been refurbished, and a 20,000-capacity ground in Yamoussoukro.

According to the government office that oversees the projects, two other 20,000-capacity locations – in the coastal port city of San Pedro and the northern city of Corhogo – are both between 60 and 70 percent finished.

However, reconstruction work at the 33,000-seat Stade Felix Haufouet-Bogen in central Abidjan is taking longer and is believed to be only 25 percent finished.

Meanwhile, Motsepe said Ivorian football “deserves unity” and insisted there would be “no defeat” in the upcoming elections for the president of the country’s football federation (FIF).

Former Chelsea star Didier Drogba is among the candidates, but he lacks the support of country clubs.

It was placed under the supervision of the FIFA Normalization Committee in December 2020 in an effort to bring the FIF out of its governance crisis.
