Kolkata’s legendary Mohammedan Sporting Club ended their 40-year-long wait for the Calcutta Football League title by defeating Railways FC 1-0 in the Premier Division A final at the Salt Lake Stadium here on Thursday.

Marcus scored the lone goal of the match to help his team win the much-awaited trophy.

Mohammedan Sporting started building up the pressure right from the start of the match with their three best players, Marcus, Azharuddin and Fayaz. The Black-and-White brigade could have scored more goals in the first half as they had so many chances, but the strikers failed to score. In the second half, Railway FC made a comeback in the match. But the Muslim’s cautious defense did no wrong. As a result, Railway FC could not open its account.

The last time Mohammedans won the Calcutta League was in 1981. Since then Mohun Bagan and East Bengal have organized the tournament. But this time both the teams were out of the Kolkata League. Mohammed Sporting tweeted after winning the title, “We dedicate our 12th Calcutta Football League title to our fans and supporters across the globe who have been waiting for this day for the last 4 decades. 12th CFL to our 12th player title.”
