Kolkata: The Calcutta High Court on Tuesday dismissed a petition on the by-elections to the Bhawanipore assembly seat, ordering that polling would be held on September 30.

A division bench of Acting Chief Justice Rajesh Bindal and Justice R Bhardwaj said it was unfair on the part of the West Bengal Chief Secretary to write a letter appealing to the Election Commission to hold the bypoll in Bhabnipur.

The court dismissed the PIL challenging the language used for the by-elections.

The chief secretary had said in the letter that there would be a “constitutional crisis” if the Bhabnipur bypoll was not held.

Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is contesting from Bhawanipur seat.
