The Nilgiris Natural History Society (NNHS) has called upon the Nilgiris district administration to clear the garbage accumulated inside the Ooty lake.
Secretary, NNHS, Ajay Ludra, in a letter to District Collector, SP Amrit, appreciated the efforts of government departments in the Nilgiris to facilitate bird counting, and to ensure that wildlife is at least killed during desilting. Had less trouble. of Ooty Lake, which has been ongoing for more than a month.
“However, it is felt that waiting for the water level to recede further, so that most of the lake dries up, in the meantime, garbage can be collected from the lake bed,” Mr. Ludra said. The secretary of NNHS informed that the water flowing into Ooty lake contains a lot of domestic and commercial waste which is polluting the body of the lake. “A concerted effort is requested from the municipality and other agencies concerned with waste disposal. Without such efforts, one can only imagine that in the process of desilting, the solid material to rot and decompose on the lake shore will be thrown,” he said.
Mr Ludra urged the District Collector to use all agencies at the disposal of the district administration to ensure that the cleanliness of the lake this year is “one to emulate for years to come”.
He said that the cleanliness would help in showcasing Ooty in a new light to the tourists.
