Congress veteran Harish Rawat, on the eve of counting of votes for the Uttarakhand Assembly elections, raised doubts over the machinery of the government and questioned why the CCTV cameras of the room where EVMs are kept in Haridwar failed.
Rawat asked whether the Election Commission would take into account the fact that the CCTV cameras in the strong room in Haridwar district – where EVMs are kept – failed on at least three occasions.
“It cannot be a mere coincidence that the CCTV cameras failed thrice. The credibility of the government is already at stake. They are trying to win elections by nefarious means,” Rawat said on Wednesday evening.
Congress campaign committee chief and former Uttarakhand chief minister Rawat is contesting from Lalkuan in Nainital district. His daughter Anupama Rawat is contesting from Haridwar Rural seat. Rawat had also repeatedly questioned the slow pace of return of ballot papers considered crucial in state elections.
Meanwhile, sensing the possibility of a hung assembly, the Congress has deployed an army of leaders from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Haryana. For the first time in state elections, the party has assigned observers from other states at every counting center in Uttarakhand.
Rajya Sabha MP Deepender Hooda met party workers in Haridwar in the role of observer and gave them suggestions. Congress leader from Madhya Pradesh Jitu Patwari is also meeting party workers.
