“It is observed that Kerala has reported its state-level COVID-19 data after a gap of five days (from April 13). This has affected and skewed the status of India’s key surveillance indicators like cases, deaths and positivity. India registered a 90 per cent increase in new cases and 165 per cent increase in positivity in a single day,” Mr. Agarwal said.
The letter said that the Union Health Ministry has emphasized the need for a robust reporting mechanism on a daily basis for regular state-wise cases and deaths.
Since the start of the pandemic, the government has been receiving relevant data daily which has helped in proactive analysis and strategy formulation at the national level.
Mr Agarwal said that daily and diligent reporting of data is critical to reach a meaningful understanding of the pandemic at the district, state and national levels and ensure that any discrepancy, surge or emerging trend is caught in a timely manner.
“This is particularly relevant as it is a highly contagious disease and has an associated risk of new variants emerging. Quick and continuous updating of data will aid India in its fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and not only tracking and This will help in monitoring but also in defining strategies and plans at the Centre, State and District levels,” the letter said.
“Accordingly, you are requested to ensure that necessary details are updated daily by the State to the Union Health Ministry,” the letter said.
As per the data updated at 8 am on Monday, Kerala has reported 213 COVID-19 deaths within 24 hours.
