N. Chandrababu Naidu said that inclusion of backward castes in the census is necessary for their welfare and progress.
The Telugu Desam Party has urged the Center to conduct the caste enumeration of the Backward Classes.
In a letter addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, TDP national president N. Chandrababu Naidu said that inclusion of backward castes in the census is necessary for their welfare and progress.
Pointing to the fact that backward classes constitute the majority of the population in the country, but there was a “neglected lot”, the TDP leader recalled that the Kaka Kalelkar Commission, the first Backward Classes Commission constituted in 1953, and other subsequent commissions , including institutions formed by the state governments, had recommended the enumeration of backward classes in the census.
Referring to speculation that the caste census would deepen existing social divisions and lead to discrimination, Shri Naidu said that exclusion of caste data would be as unjust as caste based discrimination. “The lack of data will only result in inefficient policies and weak implementation of plans designed for the welfare and development of BCs,” he said.
He said the previous data was almost 90 years old and hence out of date and welfare schemes cannot be implemented based on it and urged “the right step towards creating an egalitarian society”.
Shri Naidu said that the effective implementation of Articles 15(4) and 16(4) of the Constitution relating to reservation for backward classes in educational institutions and state services is done without assessing the population of the backward classes to understand the proportion of their representation in different areas. was not possible. walks of life.
He said the Andhra Pradesh Assembly had unanimously passed a resolution on the Backward Classes Caste Census under the TDP regime and sent it for the Centre’s consideration. “Many policies and schemes for BC welfare have not given the desired results in the absence of adequate data on their population. The only answer is to include caste data in census calculations,” he reiterated.
