Maharashtra Chief Minister and Shiv Sena president Uddhav Thackeray on Sunday said that since he has seen the BJP betraying his “naive” father and Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, he himself is working tactfully with that party and he Can’t ignore the “game”. Why Hinduism? In a veiled attack on Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) president and his cousin Raj Thackeray, the chief minister said he does not pay attention to “new players” of Hindutva. Without naming the MNS, he also said that the party is conducting experiments to see whether a cause is working or not. Speaking during a conversation organized by Marathi daily ‘Loksatta’, Uddhav Thackeray accused the BJP of betraying Bal Thackeray in a later lifetime, when the two parties were still partners.
“It is alleged that Shiv Sena is not the same as it was during Balasaheb Thackeray’s time. This is true. Balasaheb Bhole Hote (Balasaheb was innocent),” he said. “I myself have seen how you betrayed Balasaheb from time to time. So, I am being a little smart with you. I am not gullible. He was ignoring the games played by you under the guise of Hindutva. But I will not ignore it,” he added.
The Chief Minister said that his father instilled Hindutva in him. When asked about Raj Thackeray, he said, “I don’t pay attention to such players. People have experienced what game these players play and on what basis. Sometimes they play Marathi game, sometimes Hindutva game. People of Maharashtra have seen such games.” In the past, the MNS had raised the issue of Marathi people, while recently it has taken a pro-Hindutva stand. In his rally held last month, Raj Thackeray had given an ultimatum to the state government to remove loudspeakers from mosques by May 3, failing which Hanuman Chalisa would be played in large quantities outside these religious places.
“… In the last two years, theaters and cinema halls were closed due to the pandemic. So, if one is entertaining for free, why shouldn’t he or she enjoy it?” Uddhav Thackeray apparently took a jibe, referring to speeches made by Raj Thackeray, who is scheduled to address a public rally in Aurangabad on Sunday evening. The Chief Minister further said that if a consumer does not like the product during the marketing phase, then he returns it. Similarly, the party is conducting experiments to see if any cause is working for it, he said without naming the MNS. He said that the Shiv Sena is a “Hindutvawadi” party.
He said that the order of the Supreme Court on noise pollution is for the entire country and the Center should issue an order to implement it. The chief minister said he had not read the apex court’s order but tried to understand it. He said that from what he understood, the order does not just talk about removal of some loudspeakers. “People of all religions have to follow it,” he said. Thackeray also accused the BJP of doing vendetta politics in Maharashtra. The chief minister did not specify his remarks, but is believed to be referring to the action taken by central agencies against leaders of the ruling Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) in the state.
