Cheetahs from Namibia make their first hunt in Kuno National Park

Two cheetahs brought from Namibia to Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh made their first feeding within 24 hours of being released from quarantine into a large adaptation enclosure. Male cheetahs hunted a cheetal (spotted deer) on Sunday night or early Monday and the forest monitoring team got the information on Monday morning.

Freddy and Elton, two men cheetahsAfter being quarantined from September 17, he was released on Saturday in a large enclosure spread over 98 hectares. The first hunting by cats has also sparked park management’s concerns about their hunting abilities.

According to Chief Conservator of Forests of Kuno National Park, Uttam Kumar Sharma, “cheetahs eat their prey within two hours of hunting,” he also said that six other cheetahs would also be released into friendly enclosures in a phased manner.

Since their release on 17 September, eight cheetahs have been housed in six “boma” (enclosures), two of which are 50 m x 30 m in size and the other four are 25 m.

Seventy years after they were declared extinct in India, eight cheetahs—five females and three males in the age group of 30-66 months—were released into dedicated quarantine areas in the KNP on September 17 at a ceremony presided over by Prime Minister Narendra . Modi ji on his birthday

As part of the Government of India’s ambitious Project Cheetah Initiative, cheetahs are being reintroduced into the wild as per IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) guidelines.

The eight cheetahs – Freddy, Elton, Savannah, Sasha, Oban, Asha, Sibilli and Saisa – were to be placed in quarantine for a month as per the initial plan. This was done keeping in mind the international norms that wild animals of the state should be kept in quarantine for a month to check the spread of any infection before and after their transfer to another country.

The last three cheetahs of India were hunted by the Maharaja of Korea, Ramanuj Pratap Singh Deo, in Chhattisgarh in 1947-48. Subsequently, the Government of India declared cheetahs extinct in 1952.
