Panaji: FC Goa keep their play-off hopes alive with a five-star performance Chennai FC whose top-four aspirations suffered a setback as they lost 5-0 Indian Super League Feather Tilak Maidan Stadium on Wednesday.
George ortizo (20th, 41st, 53rd) scored a hat-trick when Maken Chothe (6th) opened the scoring for Gaur with Narayan Das (45th OG) putting the ball into his own net, to wrap up Chennaiyin’s night.
Goa went on to return to form in excellent form, scoring five games without a win, reaching 18 points from 16 matches and making their goal difference a world good. He finished ninth. For Chennaiyin, it was their second consecutive defeat, meaning the former champions remained on 19 points from 16 matches and finished eighth in the points table.
It was FC Goa from the start, as they commanded the proceedings from start to finish, leaving Chennaiyin with little room to breathe.
Chhote scored his first ISL goal after slipping from Edu Bedia
Eban Dohling on the left edge for the young winger first volleyed the ball with aplomb into the back of the net to serve up a crisp cross at the far end for the fourth.
Soon after Ortiz made it 2–0, Dohling again put the ball inside the field after Brandon Fernandes sent it clear over the left channel. The Chennai defense was left watching as they failed to clear the threat and the ball went to Ortiz, who took a few touches before hitting home to Debjit Majumdar in the Chennai goal.
Dohling, for all his industry, could have made it 3-0 for Goa with an Edu Bedia corner, but his header was pushed to safety by Debjeet. Chennaiyin failed to hold on to the game and there was almost no threat in the third attack as Goa scored two more goals before the halftime whistle.
First, Ortiz doubled his tally with a brilliant dohling to launch the attack again as he combined with Alberto Noguera in the middle of the park. Noguera eschews some Chennaiyin shirt to pass the ball to Ortiz who took a clever touch to avoid Anirudh Thapa and set the house on fire.
At the stroke of halftime, Noguera swam in a delightful ball inside the box and under a pressure Narayan Das swung it into his net to complete his team’s half.
Goa’s dominance was seen more in the second half as Chennaiyin failed to seize any real opportunity in front of the target. Ortiz crowned his stellar performance with a first hat-trick this season, when Dohling mixed some defenders to nudge the ball along the Spaniard’s path, whose sublime first touch took the ball away from Narine as he fired a rifle. Closely charged the house.
Chennaiyin tried hard to weather the Goa storm by bringing in Nerijus Valskis for the ineffective Lukasz Gikiewicz, but it was not their day.
