Children are more prone to anxiety; Task force suggests screening of children in the age group of 8 to 18 years

Fast-paced life, coupled with increasing competition and unreasonable expectations from peers, have given rise to issues of concern not only among men and women but also among children. According to a report in the New York Times, along with adults, anxiety has started falling on children as well. In view of the deteriorating mental health status in children, the US Preventive Service Task Force has for the first time recommended screening of children aged 8 to 18 years.

Whiteside, a child psychologist and director of the Pediatric Anxiety Disorders Clinic at Mayo Clinic, anxiety has emerged as the most common mental disorder in childhood. He emphasized the need to screen children because he believed that most children do not receive the support they need for mental health care.

The report also said that the two years spent during the Kovid-19 pandemic has increased anxiety among children. “Children with behavioral problems are more likely to be identified as in need of help, but if children with anxiety disorders are not causing problems at school or at home, they can easily slip through the cracks,” Whiteside said. ” Whether a physician is looped in any signs or symptoms, the US Task Panel recommended screening for anxiety.

According to task force member Marth Kubik, “It is necessary to intervene before life becomes a mess. A report from the Child Mind Institute suggests that childhood anxiety disorders can turn into depression, stress, behavioral problems, and even drug use.”

The task force said it does not have enough evidence to recommend screening for children under the age of 8. At the same time, America’s CDC i.e. Center for Disease Control and Prevention says that more than 7 percent of children aged 3 to 17 years have been found to be suffering from anxiety. It has been said in the study that the symptoms of depression start appearing from the age of 17.
