“China is 60 years ahead because …”: CEO’s post spark debate on India’s holiday calendar

Ravikumar Tumlachara, founder and CEO of Cleanerrooms Container, has argued online about India’s holiday culture, arguing that the country’s constant brakes are hindering productivity and damaging international credibility. In a LinkedIn Post, Mr. Tumalacharala shared a screenshot of the holiday list in April 2025 and called for revaluation of the country’s public holiday system. He also tagged several major government bodies, including the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), and paid attention to the negative effects of excessive holidays on businesses.

“A lot of holidays, no work is going on! While we respect India’s cultural and spiritual prosperity, the surcharge of public and alternative holidays, combined with weekends, often uses in a stagnation. In April 2025, we have 10+ holidays, and most of the offices are not looking for any file movements for weeks,” Mr. Tumlacharla wrote,

In addition, Mr. Tumlacharla accepted the importance of celebrating both Indian and Western traditions, however, he insisted that economic progress should not be sacrificed. “We want to celebrate both Indian and Western traditions, but not at the cost of productivity. It affects MSMES, important areas and international credibility,” he wrote.

The CEO also compared with China. “China is 60 years ahead because they give priority to economic speed. In India, we often move abroad in search of smooth systems and sharp processes,” he said.

“This is the time to reconsider our holiday culture and attack a better balance,” he wrote tagging several major government bodies.

Since shared, Mr. Tummalacharla’s post has divided the Internet. While some agreed with his views, others challenged his argument, stating that it is a one-sided story around productivity that often ignores burnout, mental health and work-life balance.

“The fact that such posts always come from the employer and never say much … It highlights unilateral tale around productivity that often ignores burnouts, mental health, and work-life balance. The holidays do not stop only in economic activity-they do not need to work any other ways to revive, revive people.”

“China is 60 years ahead because he had rapid industrialization and cut the corners on economic policies and human work conditions,” another explained by another.

“You also include weekends, alternative holidays and regional holidays. You have also included public holidays that overlap with weekends,” said a third user.

“Honorly, there are no holiday problems – there are disabled systems. India’s festivals are fuel culture, community and even local economies. Let’s fix the workflows, do not erase identity. Productivity comes from smart processes, not low function,” another explained.
