The report said the ratings, comments and reviews of the Amazon.cn entry for Xi’s “The Governance of China” were cleared and disabled in response to a Beijing order nearly two years ago. According to one of the unidentified people familiar with the incident, the reviews that triggered the request were rating the work at less than a maximum of five stars.

The move was part of a broader campaign to ensure Amazon could move forward with business in the world’s most populous country, where its Kindle and cloud computing operations had room to grow. As of 2018, the company was receiving “an increasing number of requests from (Chinese) watchdogs to remove some content, mostly politically sensitive ones,” according to an internal briefing document cited by Reuters.

An Amazon spokesperson told Bloomberg News that it “complies with all applicable laws and regulations wherever we operate, and China is no exception.”

The experience reported in the report is from Apple Inc., which has grown rapidly in recent years with Beijing. Apple 97% of requests were complied with On behalf of the Chinese government for user device information in 2019, up from 65% in 2014.

Reviews of Xi’s speeches and articles are blocked only on Amazon’s Chinese website. An entry from Amazon.com has received 74% five-star reviews.
