China’s Sichuan province was hit by the most powerful earthquake since 2013, 7 killed

On September 5 at 12:52 pm (local time) a strong 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck a mountainous area in the west of China’s Sichuan province, killing at least seven people, state television CCTV informed of.

The China Earthquake Networks Center said the quake’s epicenter was located at a depth of 16 kilometers in the city of Luding, 180 kilometers southwest of Sichuan’s capital Chengdu.

The quake is considered the most powerful in Sichuan since 2013, as the tremors were felt by the provincial capital Chengdu and Xian and Changsha.

Within minutes, an aftershock of magnitude 4.2 struck Yan, about 100 kilometers southwest of Chengdu.

Earlier in April 2013, a magnitude 7.0 earthquake struck Yan, killing more than 100 people and injuring thousands. Earlier, in May 2008, an 8.0 magnitude earthquake struck Wenchuan, killing about 70,000 people and causing widespread damage in Sichuan.
