Country to cut NEV subsidy by 30% in 2022

China’s state planner said on Friday that restrictions on the purchase of new energy vehicles (NEVs) would be gradually lifted in various parts of the country in a “vigorous” push to boost NEVs and “green consumption”.

The creation of ancillary infrastructure to charge and replace batteries, store energy and refill hydrogen cells will also be strengthened, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said in a document.

Last year, NEV sales grew more than 1.5 times.

Many large Chinese cities such as Beijing, Guangzhou and Tianjin impose license plate quotas to limit the number of new vehicles on roads and congestion, which also apply to NEVs.

China has seen a huge boost to NEVs and sales growth in recent years as part of its efforts to curb air pollution. Last year, NEV sales grew more than 1.5 times.

However, the country will cut NEV subsidies by 30% in 2022 and withdraw them completely from next year, assuming the market has matured enough for demand to grow without government help.
