CJI Lalit to retire on November 8, government asked him to name his successor

New Delhi: Speeding up the process of appointing the next head of the Indian judiciary, the government on Friday wrote to Chief Justice of India Uday Umesh Lalit to recommend his successor.

Justice Lalit will retire as CJI on November 8 after a brief tenure of 74 days.

“As per MoP on appointment of Chief Justice of India and Judges of Supreme Court, today Hon’ble Minister of Law and Justice sent a letter to Hon’ble Chief Justice of India to send his recommendations for appointment of his successor,” Ministry of Law and Justice said in a tweet.

This is probably the first time the ministry has tweeted about this.

As per the Memorandum of Procedure (MoP), the CJI names the senior-most judge as his successor.

MoP is a document that guides the appointment and transfer of judges of the Supreme Court and High Court.

Justice DY Chandrachud is the senior-most judge after the CJI.

As per established custom and tradition, Justice Chandrachud will be the 50th CJI and will take oath on November 9.

He will have a two-year term and will step down on November 10, 2024.

Judges of the Supreme Court retire after attaining the age of 65 years, while the judges of the High Courts retire at the age of 62 years.
