CJI UU Lalit able to restore public confidence in judicial system: Mamata Banerjee

Chief Minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerjee On Sunday, all praises poured in for the current Chief Justice of India, UU Lalit, and said that he has clearly been able to restore public confidence in the country’s judicial system during the last two months.

“I do not know whether this is the right forum to congratulate the current Chief Justice of India, UU Lett. But I must say that during the last two months the public confidence in the judicial system of the country has been greatly restored. The court is like a religious place. People knock on the legal doors in the hope of justice. Therefore, it is important that people’s faith in the judicial system remains,” the chief minister said while addressing the 14th convocation of the West Bengal National Forensic Science University here on Sunday afternoon.

Chief Justice of India UU Lalit, Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Prakash Srivastava and Chief Justice of Bangladesh Hassan Foyez Siddiqui were present on the occasion.

His speech contained a veiled apprehension about the dangers faced by the federal system of democracy in India. “Social prestige is everything to us. If we lose our social standing we lose everything. Therefore, I would request all those associated with the judicial system to maintain the federal system of democracy,” the chief minister said.

Without making any direct reference to the central government and the BJP, the Chief Minister said that these days unnecessary harassment of people has increased manifold. “All democratic forces are being murdered by a section of the people. If this continues, it may move towards the presidential form of government. Where will democracy last then? So, please protect democracy, and that is my only request,” the chief minister said.

Speaking on the occasion, Mamata Banerjee also launched a scathing attack against the media and claimed that it is often running parallel tests. “It cannot happen. The media cannot dictate the judicial system,” she said.
