Compressed natural gas (CNG) prices in the national capital were hiked by ₹2.50 per kg for the second day in a row on April 7, taking the total increase since March to ₹12.5 per kg. According to the information posted on the website of Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL), the price of CNG in the National Capital Region (NCT) of Delhi is now ₹69.11 per kg as against ₹66.61 per kg. in the national capital and surrounding cities.
On Wednesday also the prices had increased by Rs 2.50 per kg. However, there was no change in the rates of piped natural (cooking) gas (PNG). Its cost is ₹ 41.61 per standard cubic metre. CNG prices in Delhi have increased by ₹12.48 per kg since March when gas distributors in the city started factoring in higher international energy prices.
On Thursday, Mahanagar Gas Limited (MGL) increased the price of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) in Mumbai by ₹7 per kg to ₹67 per kg, while Gujarat Gas increased the rate by ₹6.50 per kg to ₹76.98 per kg. . Prices vary from city to city depending on the incidence of local taxes such as VAT.
The increase comes on the back of the government to more than double natural gas prices to $6.1 per million British thermal units from 1 April. Natural gas becomes CNG when compressed for use as a fuel in automobiles. The same gas is also supplied to domestic kitchens and industries for cooking and other purposes.
The hike in CNG prices comes after the hike in petrol and diesel prices by Rs 10 per liter and LPG rates by Rs 50 per cylinder in 16 days. A record 137-day gap in petrol and diesel price revision ended on March 22. On the same day, the price of 14.2 kg LPG cylinder increased to Rs 949.50 in the national capital. In some places, the price of LPG has gone up to Rs 1,000.
According to IGL, the price of CNG will now be Rs 71.67 per kg in Noida, Greater Noida and Ghaziabad and Rs 77.44 per kg in Gurugram, the adjoining cities of Delhi.
