Cockroaches are a common problem in most households, particularly in kitchens, drainage areas, and storerooms. They carry bacteria that can cause serious diseases, which is why many people instinctively try to kill them on sight.
However, Deepak Sharma of India Pest Control Company advises that this may not be the best approach. Instead of chasing them and crushing them underfoot, he recommends using pesticides. In an interview with The Indian Express, he explained the reasons behind this advice.
“Cockroaches carry various pathogens, including bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella. When we crush them with our feet, the pathogens on their bodies can transfer to the surrounding surfaces, increasing the risk of spreading infection. Other insects, like ants, may also consume the remains of dead cockroaches, further facilitating the spread of bacteria,” shared Deepak Sharma.
Moreover, squashing cockroaches releases an unpleasant odour. Some people believe that stepping on cockroaches releases the eggs attached to their bodies, increasing the risk of infestation. However, Deepak clarifies that this is not accurate.
“Cockroaches lay their eggs inside a protective casing called an ootheca, which can contain up to 50 eggs. Females deposit these casings in hidden, safe locations. If a cockroach that hasn’t laid eggs is killed, there is little chance that any eggs will scatter and hatch.”
Cockroaches thrive in dark, damp, and warm environments where food is readily available, such as under gas cylinders, beneath sinks, and behind refrigerators. Pesticides should be sprayed in such areas to eliminate them effectively. Under no circumstances should cockroaches be touched or trampled, as doing so increases the risk of bacterial transmission. Keeping your home and surroundings clean and tidy is key to preventing infestations. Efforts should be made to avoid creating conditions that attract them in the first place.
Natural Remedies
Instead of chemical pesticides, some natural remedies can also be effective. Popular chef Ananya Banerjee offers a few natural DIY tips that are safe and efficient.
- Placing bay leaves in kitchen corners and dark spaces helps repel cockroaches, as they dislike the smell. Cloves, cinnamon, and neem leaves can also be used similarly.
- Another method is to mix boric acid powder with sugar and place small amounts in different areas of the kitchen. Cockroaches are attracted to the sugar and die after consuming the boric acid. Care must be taken to keep this mixture away from food.
- Mixing two drops of neem oil with water and spraying it in areas where cockroaches are frequently seen can help deter them from returning.
