The Coimbatore Corporation plans to implement an area-level parking management system to streamline parking at RS Puram and Race Course in a phased manner.
The civic body held an interim review meeting on Tuesday in which the consultants engaged in drafting the parking management plan presented their preliminary findings of the field study to the authorities.
The corporation, in collaboration with the traffic wing of the city police, has proposed to organize parking in areas where vehicle density was high. Irregular parking was identified on Dewan Bahadur Road and West Periyasamy Road and Race Course Road in RS Puram.
The study carried out on the main lanes, secondary and peripheral roads in the race course identified potential parking impactors, adequacy of infrastructure and peak parking hours. The study found that an average of 7,000 pedestrians and 200 cyclists a day used the race course and its surrounding roads. About 92% of vehicles were parked for less than two hours during weekdays, which was 82% during weekends.
In RS Puram, a study conducted on 12 main roads and 31 secondary roads found that commuters for work and shopping park their vehicles on the roads. Municipal Commissioner M. Pratap said that the civic body will conduct ground studies in collaboration with the police department and implement parking management plans on DB Road in a phased manner. The consultants will submit the final plan by March, following which the civic body will implement on-road and off-road parking in these areas.
