Commerce ministry recommends anti-dumping duty on vinyl tiles from China, Taiwan

With a view to protect domestic companies from cheap imports from these countries, the commerce ministry has recommended imposition of anti-dumping duty on vinyl tiles from China and Taiwan for a period of five years.

According to news agency PTI, the Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR) has issued a notification in this regard.

The directorate said the decision has been taken after an investigation concluded that the product has been exported to India at dumped prices, which has hurt the domestic industry.

“The Authority recommends the imposition of anti-dumping duty on imports originating in or exported from the subject countries for a period of five years,” the notification said.

Vinyl tiles or PVC floor tiles, which are used for floor covering in residential and commercial buildings, mimic the appearance of natural materials.

The Directorate conducted the investigation following complaints from Welspun Flooring Limited, Welspun Global Brands Limited, Welspun India Limited. The directorate works under the Ministry of Commerce.

The recommended charges are USD 2.05 per square meter and USD 1.44 per square meter. The final decision on levying the fee is taken by the Ministry of Finance. PTI reported that the imposition of anti-dumping duty is permitted under the World Trade Organization (WTO) regime.

The purpose of the duty is to ensure fair trade practices and create a level-playing field for domestic producers as compared to foreign producers and exporters.
