New Delhi: A safe and secure world is a shared responsibility, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said while addressing the 90th Interpol General Assembly in the national capital on Tuesday.
Describing India as a case study in “sustaining diversity and democracy”, Modi said that “over the past 99 years”, Interpol, which will be at its 100th position in 2023, had connected 195 countries globally.
“This is despite differences in the legal framework,” Modi said, adding that it was a call for “universal cooperation to make the world a better place”.
“India is one of the top contributors to UN peacekeeping operations. From climate targets to COVID vaccines, India has shown willingness to lead in any crisis,” Modi said.
Modi also spoke about the contribution of police forces in social welfare.
“Police forces around the world are advancing social welfare. They are the frontline responders during any crisis. I pay my respects to the police personnel who have made supreme sacrifice in the service of the people.”
Earlier, a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office said: “The Interpol General Assembly meeting is being held in India after a gap of nearly 25 years – the last time it was in 1997. India to host the Interpol General Assembly in 2022 The proposal to coincide with the celebration of the 75th year of India’s independence in New Delhi was accepted by the General Assembly with an overwhelming majority.
Held From 18-21 October in New Delhi, the 90th Interpol General Assembly will be attended by representatives of 195 Interpol member states, including ministers, police chiefs of countries, national central bureau chiefs and senior police officers.
