The seventh day of the Commonwealth Games was a great day for the Indian contingent as medals were assured and the teams were ahead in the knockouts. To begin with, Hima Das qualified for the 200m semi-final, and PV Sindhu defeated Fatimath Nabaha Abdul Razzaq of Maldives to enter the pre-quarterfinals of the women’s singles event. Kidambi Srikanth won his game vs Daniel Vanaglia in the men’s singles round of 32 badminton event.
The Indian men’s hockey team made a hat-trick of goals from vice-captain Harmanpreet to beat Wales 4-1 to enter the semi-finals of the competition. But with all said and done, the day belonged to the Indian boxers.
Amit Panghal started off with an absolutely brilliant performance and assured India another medal as the 26-year-old worked his way to an easy win over Scotland’s Lennon Mulligan.
Following in Panghal’s footsteps, Jasmine defeated Troy Garten of New Zealand in the women’s lightweight (60kg) quarterfinals by a 4–1 split decision. Both Amit and Jasmine made it to the semi-finals of their respective events.
If that wasn’t enough, Sagar Ahlawat Sagar Ahlawat joined Panghal and Jasmine in the semi-finals as the 22-year-old defeated Seychelles’ KD Evans Agnes 5-0 in the men’s +92kg competition.
