Commonwealth Games 2022: ‘When we take on Barbados, we will try to build on the gains from Pakistan’s win’ – Harmanpreet

Birmingham: India Women’s cricket team captain Harmanpreet Kaur has said that the players are excited by a thumping win against Pakistan in their Group A match of the Commonwealth Games and now they want to take advantage to beat Barbados in the last pool match here.

India’s bowlers, led by off-spinner Sneh Rana (2/15) and left-arm spinner Radha Yadav (2/18), put on stellar performances to lay the groundwork for a comprehensive eight-wicket win over arch-rivals. Their second Group A match is at Edgbaston on Sunday.

After bowling Pakistan out for just 99 in an 18-over game due to rain, opener Smriti Mandhana smashed an unbeaten 63 and played a brilliant shot that took the square in equal measure to chase down the total with 38 balls. and felt happy.

Pakistan’s eight-wicket defeat to Australia after a three-wicket loss to Australia in the opening match means India are keeping their semi-final hopes alive.

“There were a lot of positives in the win and (we) hope to continue that for the upcoming Games (in Birmingham). In the last match also (against Australia) we played really well but lost. We are enjoying the victory against Pakistan.

“Our target was to restrict them (Pakistan) to below 100 and we got off to a good start in the first six overs (powerplay),” the captain said.

Harmanpreet hoped that the team would show further improvement in the last group game against Barbados, noting that they had two full days to prepare for the crucial competition.

“Our next match against Barbados is really important. We have two days to prepare and as a team we will try the things that we need to do. We will try to consolidate that plan in the nets.”

Young India opener Shafali Verma said that with the crowd for India, it was a great opportunity for the team.

“It was really good to seal a victory against Pakistan. Of course, the crowd played a huge role in the victory. With the support of the crowd, we really enjoyed the game and gave it our best shot. Our last group match against Barbados is very important. We want everyone to give their 100 per cent in the game.
