Communist deputy calls for Russian withdrawal from Ukraine – Times of India

MOSCOW: Breaking along party lines in a rare display of opposition to his country’s war in Ukraine, a Communist Party legislative deputy in Russia’s Far East called for an end to the military campaign and the withdrawal of Russian forces. “We understand that if our country does not stop the military campaign, then there will be more orphans in our country,” Leonid Vasuyukevich Said at the meeting of the Primorsk regional Assembly in the Pacific port of vladivostok on Friday.
His remarks, which he addressed to the President Vladimir PutinEmigration from the area were shown in a video posted on a Telegram channel.
Another deputy followed suit to support Vasukevich’s views, but the Speaker of the Legislative Assembly later issued a statement calling the remarks a “political provocation”, which was not supported by the majority of lawmakers.
Earlier this month, a Russian diplomat based in Geneva resigned saying he was “ashamed” of the war.
Russia has imposed severe punishment for publicly challenging the Kremlin’s statement on a military operation in Ukraine.
