Confident of good performance in 2023 Meghalaya polls, TMC asks to keep a close watch on defection

With barely 10 months left for the assembly elections in Meghalaya, the Trinamool Congress has changed the political dynamics of the state with its entry and is now confident of a good show.

Speaking to News18, TMC’s Meghalaya in-charge Dr Manas Ranjan Bhunia said that he is confident that the party will do well in the 2023 elections as the functioning of the National People’s Party-led NDA government did not live up to the expectations of the people of the state.

Dr Bhunia said, “We are confident that our team at State, District and Block level under the leadership of Dr. Mukul Sangma and Charles Pyngrop is progressing very well and receiving positive response from the people of the state.” said.

He said that this is also because the state government headed by Conrad K Sangma is working in a manner which is not positive for the people of Meghalaya.

At present, the Trinamool Congress is the only opposition party in the Meghalaya Assembly.

Dr Bhunia, who is also a cabinet minister in the Mamata Banerjee government in West Bengal, arrived in the state on Saturday and met Dr Mukul Sangma and other state leaders to discuss preparations for the 2023 elections.

Pointing out issues against the current coalition government in Meghalaya, he also referred to the Memorandum of Understanding signed between Meghalaya and Assam and alleged that “land has been given to Assam against the interests of the people of Meghalaya”. He also highlighted other issues like economic development and “imposition” of Hindi language in the northeastern states.

Bhunia said the TMC state leadership was getting support from different sections of the society. “We are getting people from fields like education, culture, social work and those who really love Meghalaya and put the interest of the state paramount,” he said.

The Trinamool leader, however, said the party would decide later whether it would field candidates in all 60 seats as the final decision rests with Mamata Banerjee and state leaders Mukul Sangma and Charles Pangroop.

The party has so far formed state committees in addition to district committees in 12 districts. The work of officially opening the state party office is also going on. According to him, the party has also taken a positive step towards the formation of block committees in 60 assembly constituencies.

Bhunia also pointed out that party activities had slowed down after Mukul Sangma’s son had a serious road accident in Bengaluru recently and he is to be operated upon.

“He (Mukul) is a bit busy with his son’s treatment. We will resume work in a few days after his son recovers. However, others are pushing our agenda.”

Responding to allegations that some Trinamool MLAs are likely to join other political parties before the 2023 elections, Dr Bhunia said: “I am not aware of that. I will discuss with Mukul Sangma… So let’s see what is happening. We are keeping an eye on this issue.”
