Confirmation of Rahul’s stand on social media platforms: After Twitter, Congress says it’s for healthy debate

The Congress on Thursday said its leader Rahul Gandhi’s stand that the ruling government cannot suppress or subdue democracy and social media platforms. This came to the fore when Twitter said it was committed to India and had a healthy debate on its platform.

Gandhi wrote on Twitter alleging “unintentional complicity” in curbing free and fair speech in India and expressed serious concern at “suppressing” his Twitter account followers. Twitter, however, said the number of account followers is “meaningful and accurate”.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Rahul Gandhi’s stand has been that social media platforms cannot be suppressed, subjugated and defamed in place of trolls and instead there should be a healthy debate and discussion on them.

“Plurality, multi-culturalism, open debate, criticism of government policies and programs and that social media platforms should be healthy forums for debate and discussion, has been Rahul Gandhi’s stand, which has now been proven correct.” Surjewala told PTI.

In his letter to Twitter CEO Parag Agarwal, Gandhi had said, “I am writing to you on behalf of over a billion Indians not to let Twitter become a pawn in the destruction of the idea of India”.

In his letter to Twitter on December 27, Gandhi said, “I want to bring your attention to what I believe is Twitter’s unintentional complicity in preventing free and fair speech in India.”

Responding to them, Sinead McSweeney, Twitter’s vice president, global public policy and philanthropy, has said “Twitter is deeply committed to India” and will ensure that the public conversation is healthy, involving diverse voices, diverse perspectives, Thereby giving people better information and to participate safely and comfortably.

Twitter also pointed out that it does not arbitrarily censor political content and that elevating political debate and open discourse is fundamental to its service and core values. “We understand that increased transparency is at the foundation for fostering healthy public conversation and earning trust on Twitter. We know it is important that people understand our processes and that we are transparent about what happens as a result. McSweeney said, “We can assure you that Twitter, Inc. We take our role as a platform service provider very seriously and we are committed to India.”

Gandhi had said that the ideological battle between liberal democracy and authoritarianism around the world is being shaped on social media platforms and this puts a huge responsibility on those who are at the helm of companies like Twitter. As the leader of India’s largest opposition party, Gandhi said it was his duty to raise my voice on behalf of our people against injustice.

“As you know, India’s institutional structure is under constant attack and the traditional mainstream media is completely taken over,” he alleged. ,

“In this backdrop, it is shocking that my Twitter follower growth has suddenly been suppressed,” he alleged, adding that his Twitter followers, which were growing by an average of 10,000 every day, have stagnated and almost zero. are gone. Sources close to him told that Twitter followers have started increasing from this week and it is increasing to around 10,000 per day. After stagnant at 19.5 million for several months, Gandhi’s followers crossed 19.6 million on Thursday morning.

The former Congress chief also pointed out that Twitter India is under “huge pressure from the government to silence my voice” and pointed out that his account has been blocked even after being “singly targeted”.

On Gandhi’s number of followers, Twitter said the numbers are “meaningful and accurate” as it continues to battle spam and malicious automation strategically with machine learning tools.

“The Twitter platform also removes millions of accounts every week for violating our policies on manipulation and spam. While some may see a slight difference, in some cases the number may be higher. We understand that this change is concerning. Maybe, but we believe accuracy and transparency will make Twitter a more reliable service for public conversation. “We are continuing our work to identify and challenge problematic accounts globally,” the company said. are distorted and distracted from the public conversation on Twitter.”

McSweeney said it focuses on developing machine learning tools that identify and automatically act on networks of spammy or automated accounts. “If we put an account in a read-only state (where the account cannot connect with others or Tweet) because our systems have detected it is behaving suspiciously, Twitter will allow it to be sent to followers. Removes it from statistics and engagement numbers until it has passed a challenge, such as verifying a phone number,” Twitter said.

To that end, the number of followers can also be the reason, keep changing more regularly. This does not mean that these account holders have done anything wrong.
