The Congress on Thursday said its leader Rahul Gandhi’s stand that the ruling government cannot suppress or subdue democracy and social media platforms. This came to the fore when Twitter said it was committed to India and had a healthy debate on its platform.
Gandhi wrote on Twitter alleging “unintentional complicity” in curbing free and fair speech in India and expressed serious concern at “suppressing” his Twitter account followers. Twitter, however, said the number of account followers is “meaningful and accurate”.
Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said Rahul Gandhi’s stand has been that social media platforms cannot be suppressed, subjugated and defamed in place of trolls and instead there should be a healthy debate and discussion on them.
“Plurality, multi-culturalism, open debate, criticism of government policies and programs and that social media platforms should be healthy forums for debate and discussion, has been Rahul Gandhi’s stand, which has now been proven correct.” Surjewala told PTI.
In his letter to Twitter CEO Parag Agarwal, Gandhi had said, “I am writing to you on behalf of over a billion Indians not to let Twitter become a pawn in the destruction of the idea of India”.
In his letter to Twitter on December 27, Gandhi said, “I want to bring your attention to what I believe is Twitter’s unintentional complicity in preventing free and fair speech in India.”
Responding to them, Sinead McSweeney, Twitter’s vice president, global public policy and philanthropy, has said “Twitter is deeply committed to India” and will ensure that the public conversation is healthy, involving diverse voices, diverse perspectives, Thereby giving people better information and to participate safely and comfortably.

Gandhi had said that the ideological battle between liberal democracy and authoritarianism around the world is being shaped on social media platforms and this puts a huge responsibility on those who are at the helm of companies like Twitter. As the leader of India’s largest opposition party, Gandhi said it was his duty to raise my voice on behalf of our people against injustice.

On Gandhi’s number of followers, Twitter said the numbers are “meaningful and accurate” as it continues to battle spam and malicious automation strategically with machine learning tools.
