Param Bir Singh is missing, Maharashtra Home Minister said a day ago.
Mumbai:
There is buzz that former Mumbai Police Commissioner Param Bir Singh may have fled the country as investigators were about to lock him up in several cases, triggering a tussle between the Congress and the BJP.
“When [Sachin] The Vaz incident happened, I had said that if I was in the government, I would have arrested Param Bir Singh first. This means that the Center has used this IPS officer to defame the state government and that is why they have helped Param Bir Singh to flee abroad,” said Maharashtra Congress chief Nana Patole.
BJP spokesperson Ram Kadam countered him, saying, “When Param Bir Singh wrote the letter and brought to the fore the allegation of extortion of Rs 100 crore, the fight started. So that Param Bir Singh does not name his political masters, Have they been sent abroad by their political masters?”
Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse Patil said Mr Singh, who dealt with the bombings near the home of India’s richest man Mukesh Ambani earlier this year, had raised questions and is facing a series of extortion cases. So he was missing.
He said, “With the Union Home Ministry we are also looking for his whereabouts. I have heard something like this but as a government official he cannot go abroad without government approval. We have issued a lookout circular and if he is there.” If he is gone, it is not good,” Mr. Patil said, on reports of Mr. Singh having fled to Russia.
“Whether it is ministers, officers or chief ministers, there are limits and no one can go out of the country without the permission of the Government of India. No one can cross these limits. Discussion on what action can be taken Will have to do it. Centre. Maharashtra government is looking for him and once it is found, we will take a decision.”
On February 25 this year, an SUV with gelatin sticks was found on Carmichael Road near Mukesh Ambani’s residence. The car belonged to Mansukh Hiren whose body was later found in Kalwa Creek in Thane.
A police officer, Sachin Vaze, was named as the main conspirator in the case of planting explosives and the subsequent murder of Mansukh Hiren. Mr. Vaze was known to be close to Param Bir Singh and had direct access despite being only an Assistant Inspector of Police.
Mr Singh was transferred from the post of Mumbai Police Commissioner in March following Mr Wez’s arrest by the National Investigation Agency (NIA).
Param Bir Singh has not been made an accused in the NIA’s chargesheet in the case, but many revelations in the chargesheet can create problems for Parambir Singh.
Following his transfer to the Home Guards department, the IPS officer made a sensational allegation against the then state Home Minister Anil Deshmukh of asking police officers to take bribes from hotel and bar owners, a charge denied.
But Mr. Deshmukh later resigned from his post as the CBI had registered a case against him. Mr Deshmukh has also not responded to summons from the Enforcement Directorate which is probing money laundering charges against him. ED has sought help from CBI to trace Deshmukh.
Mr Singh has also been named in at least four extortion complaints and Maharashtra Police Chief Sanjay Pandey recently sent a motion to suspend Mr Singh and other police officers named in extortion cases, but the state’s The Home Department has sought more information, news agency PTI reported.
