More than 130 people have died in the bridge collapse. The more than a century old bridge, which was reopened five days ago after extensive repairs and renovations, was packed with people when it collapsed on Sunday evening.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge paid tribute to those killed in the accident and said that God give strength to the families who have lost their loved ones.

Talking to reporters here, Mr Kharge said that the reasons for the collapse of the bridge which was reopened five days ago should be ascertained. “Why so many people were allowed. There should be an inquiry headed by a retired judge of Supreme Court or High Court,” Kharge said.

He said that the bereaved families and affected people should be given all possible help and compensation by the government and the injured should be provided all assistance in medical treatment by the government.

“Our (Congress) leaders have reached there. Ashok Gehlot is also reaching. We will try to help as much as possible. We don’t want to indulge in any politics or blame anyone at this point of time. The blame can be established only after the report of the inquiry is received,” Mr. Kharge said.
