Congress President’s election on October 17

New Delhi [India]Aug 28 (ANI): The Congress Working Committee (CWC) on Sunday decided that the election for the post of Congress President will be held on October 17.

Counting of votes will take place on October 19.

Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting is underway today to discuss the final schedule for the election of Congress President.

Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and party general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attended the meeting through a virtual meeting. In fact, former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh also attended the meeting.

This comes in the backdrop of the resignation of senior party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad on Friday.

Sources had said that the election of the President’s post has now become a challenge for the Congress with Rahul Gandhi not contesting the election.

According to sources, the Central Election Authority has made preparations to complete the election process on time.

Sources said that the process seems to be stalled as Rahul Gandhi is not ready to contest for the post of Congress President, though all efforts are on to persuade him.

Meanwhile, the Congress is planning to launch a ‘Bharat Jodi Yatra’ from Kanyakumari on September 7 under the leadership of party leader Rahul Gandhi and the 148-day march will culminate in Kashmir.

The five-month journey is going to cover a distance of 3,500 km and over 12 states. The padyatra (March) will cover a distance of 25 km per day.

The yatra will include padyatras, rallies and public meetings, which will be attended by senior Congress leaders including Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. (ANI)
