Congress protests after uproar in Parliament over Rahul Gandhi’s statement

Parliament repeatedly stalled as BJP demanded an apology from Rahul Gandhi

New Delhi:

Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge join the party’s protest near Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in Parliament today. The protest began soon after both the Houses were adjourned for the day in a standoff over Rahul Gandhi’s “attack on democracy” remarks in London.

Sonia Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge sat on chairs as MPs protested by holding placards and raising slogans calling for a Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) probe into the Adani-Hindenburg row.

Parliament repeatedly stalled as demands for an apology by the ruling BJP Rahul Gandhi for his remarks in London, and the opposition has been aggressively pushing for a joint parliamentary committee inquiry into US short-seller Hindenburg’s allegations against the Adani group and the subsequent fall in Adani shares.

BJP sources have said that they will not allow Rahul Gandhi to speak in the House until he apologises. The audio of the Parliament proceedings was muted this morning.

After about 20 minutes of uproar, Speaker Om Birla adjourned the proceedings of the Lok Sabha for the day. Rahul Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh and several other Union ministers were present in the House.

The Congress took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, reiterating Rahul Gandhi’s allegation that opposition leaders’ mikes are mute.

The Congress tweeted, “Earlier the mike used to go off, today the proceedings of the House are also muted. The House is silent for PM Modi’s friend.”

Parliament has not functioned for the fifth consecutive day since the budget session resumed on March 13.

Rahul Gandhi had alleged in London that the structure of Indian democracy was under attack and there was a “complete assault” on the country’s institutions.

The BJP has accused Rahul Gandhi of defaming India on foreign soil and seeking foreign intervention. The Congress retaliated by citing the example of PM Modi taking internal politics abroad.
