Congress’s ‘black protest’: Delhi Police lodges FIR against many party leaders

Opposition to Congress: Delhi Police on Friday accused Congress party workers of allegedly hurting, obstructing and disobeying police officers during a nationwide protest against price rise, unemployment and hike in the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on essential commodities. An FIR was registered against him on Saturday.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) Amrita Guguloth said that the case under sections 186 (obstructing public servant in the discharge of public functions), 188 (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant), 332 (voluntarily causing hurt to public servant) were recorded. His duty) and 34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) have been registered at Tughlaq Road police station.

Rahul Gandhi, along with 65 Congress MPs, was detained by the police at Vijay Chowk, while a total of 335 protesters were detained under section 65 of the Delhi Police Act for preventing officials from maintaining law.

Special Commissioner of Police, L&O Division, Dr Sagar Preet Hooda informed that the protesters were given proper warnings about the violation of public order and were repeatedly requested to call off the protests. Despite warnings from the police, the mob refused to comply, leading to the violation of prohibitory orders under Section 144 of CrPC.

“When the police personnel moved to control the situation, the protesters tried to stop the police officers from performing their duties, assaulted them and injured them,” Hooda said.
