Outgoing Chief Justice of India NV Ramana on Friday said pendency of cases is a big challenge here and the judiciary has at times lived up to the expectations of the people. The CJI was addressing a function organized by the Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) on Friday evening to bid him goodbye on the completion of his more than 16 months tenure.

According to news agency PTI, the 48th CJI who replaced SA Bobde said the appointment of 11 Supreme Court and 224 High Court judges was a reflection of consistency and determination to strengthen the judiciary during his tenure.

During his address at yesterday’s events, he also expressed regret for not paying much attention to the issues of listing and posting of matters for hearing in the apex court.

He further thanked his colleagues for being able to recommend the many people nominated for the judgeship. “Thank you to the judges and consulting judges of my collegium who helped me in the appointment of 11 judges in the Supreme Court and 224 judges of the High Court in the last 16 months,” he was quoted as saying by PTI.

In the last 75 years, jurisprudence has evolved greatly, and our judiciary is not defined by a single order or decision. He said that most of the time it has only advocated the interests of the people.

The outgoing CJI also said, “We can make great strides in the last 16 months by appointing more women judges and promoting social diversity on the bench. It aims to further the goal of harmonizing judges to strengthen our institution.” And is a reflection of determination. of justice.”

He also expressed satisfaction over his 16-month long journey as the Chief Justice of India and said that he never claimed himself to be a learned judge or a great judge.

“From the very beginning, I was always subjected to the investigation of conspiracies. My family and I suffered a lot in silence. However, truth always wins. ‘Satyamev Jayate’,” he said.

Meanwhile, CJI-nominated UU Lalit lauded his predecessor and highlighted his extraordinary achievements in appointing over 250 judges across the country in almost 14 months.

Attorney General KK Venugopal, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, and senior advocates Kapil Sibal, Dushyant Dave and Vikas Singh also paid tributes to the CJI for his contribution to the judiciary.

Dushyant Dave also shed tears while bidding goodbye to CJI Raman and said that he maintained checks and balances between the judiciary, the executive and the Parliament. He also called CJI Ramana a ‘civil judge’.

Justice Lalit will have a brief tenure of less than three months as CJI and will retire on November 8 this year. The retirement age of Supreme Court judges is 65 years.
