India’s third indigenous anti-covid vaccine Manufactured by Hyderabad based Biological E Ltd. Biologicals E has supplied 5 crore doses of Corbevax to the Centre, which has been later distributed to the states.

Government of India Approval and Emergency Use Authority

Corbevax received Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) from the Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) in February 2022 for children aged 12 to 18 years.

Earlier in September 2021, Biologicals E was granted permission to conduct Phase II and III clinical trials of Corbevax on children and adolescents aged 15-18 years. The Center had received approval for the roll-out of the vaccine in December 2021.

Corbewax functionality

Corbewax is an RBD-protein subunit vaccine. This vaccine uses a recombinant protein platform that targets the spike protein on the virus. Instead of instructing the vaccine cells to replicate it, the clone injects an amount of spike protein. This reduces the ability of the virus to cause any serious illness.

Dosage and Safety

Children will be given two doses at 28-day intervals for four weeks after the first dose. The vaccine is stored at 2 to 8 °C.

Officials have said the vaccine has gone through rigorous tests of safety and efficacy. “It has been verified and tested. In any case, it is given the EUA. Without safety testing, the vaccine could not have been issued,” Dr Anil Arora, Senior Consultant, Institute of Gastroenterology, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, told Hindustan Times,

He further added, “What mandates that anyone who is given a vaccine needs to be tracked for adverse side effects. This data has to be submitted to the vaccine manufacturers. So, it is thoroughly tested and tested and has been secured.” He further said that hesitation should not be a problem and urged the children to get vaccinated.

Corbewax will cost 990 per dose in private hospitals and 145 for each dose in government facilities.
