The health branch of the corporation examining the migrant workers camp in the city.
The Thiruvananthapuram Municipal Corporation’s health wing issued orders for maintaining unhygienic conditions at a camp housing migrant workers near the Government Medical College during inspections conducted on Monday.
More than 20 laborers were staying in one room. The camp was being conducted by Deepak Mandal, a native of Assam, who is currently in his native state.
A team led by SS Meenu, Health Inspector, Medical College Circle, conducted a check-up at the camp located near the Medical College-Chalkkuzhi Road in the early hours of Monday. The building in which the laborers were kept was old and dilapidated.
“On Sunday, we saw dirty water flowing from a burst drain near the medical college. When we went to trace the source, it led to this labor camp. The health squad was deployed on Monday morning to check their living conditions. There were three rooms and a total of 45 laborers in the rented house. One of those rooms was actually packed with 20 people. There was only one toilet, which was located next to the kitchen. They were all sleeping on the floor, some of them using banners as bedsheets. There was no proper arrangement of ventilation in the rooms. The well from which they got water was also impure,” Mr. Meenu said.
The corporation has issued a notice to Mr. Mandal, the owner of the building and operator of the facility. The report has been submitted to the Health and Engineering Wing of the Corporation for follow up action. The squad also included Junior Health Inspectors Muhammad Navees, VS Rekha and PL Sajin.
