Court sends Jignesh Mevani to judicial custody for one day; Will hear on bail on Monday

A local court on Sunday sent to a day’s judicial custody independent Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, who was arrested by the Assam Police from the western state on Wednesday for an alleged tweet against the prime minister. Mevani, carrying an Assamese gamchha (traditional towel) around his neck, was taken from the CJM’s residence to Kokrajhar Jail, where the hearing took place. Mevani, an independent MLA backed by Congress, was arrested from Gujarat’s Palanpur town on Wednesday night after an FIR was lodged at Kokrajhar police station over his alleged tweets under various sections of the IPC and the IT Act. Mevani was taken from Gujarat to Guwahati on Thursday morning and then taken by road to Kokrajhar, where she was produced before the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, from where she was remanded to three-day police custody.
