COVID-19 deaths in West Bengal remain a matter of concern

The state has been recording around 30 deaths over the past few days, but on Wednesday it recorded the highest number of deaths in the third wave of the pandemic.

West Bengal recorded 38 deaths due to Wednesday, January 19, 2022 covid-19 infection in the last 24 hours. Even though the case positivity ratio has declined in the state over the past few days, the high number of deaths is a cause for concern. The state has been recording around 30 deaths over the past few days, but on Wednesday it recorded the highest number of deaths in the third wave of the pandemic.

Kolkata recorded 14 deaths, followed by eight in North 24 Parganas and three each in Howrah and Hooghly districts.

The state recorded 11,447 cases in the last 24 hours and the case positivity came down to 16.98%. Till a few days back, the state was recording over 20,000 new infections and the case positivity rate was above 30%. The active cases in the state are around 1,51,702.

Experts said the increased number of deaths reflects the situation a few days back when over 20,000 infections were being recorded in the state. The number of deaths is likely to come down in the next few days. The mortality rate in the state remains at 1.05%.

Meanwhile, even as the state continues to grapple with the pandemic, the opposition has underscored the issue of low testing. On January 12, the state tested 71,792 samples which came down to 53,824 on January 18. This increased to 67,404 on 19 January.
