Beijing: another 259 COVID-19 Cases have been reported in the southern Chinese island province HainanWhere about 80,000 tourists are stranded by the pandemic restrictions.
Officials declared Hainan beach resort town Sanya On Saturday, a Covid-19 hot spot and Chinese citizens and expatriates were confined to their hotels in what they hoped would be a break from tight restrictions in much of China. Tourists wishing to leave Sanya have to test negative for coronavirus on five PCR tests in seven days.
In all, China on Monday reported 324 new locally transmitted cases as well as 483 asymptomatic cases, which China categorizes separately.
China has stuck to a “zero-Covid” policy, despite the economic and social costs. It has credited that approach for keeping hospitalization and mortality rates lower than in other countries, which have opened up amid higher vaccination rates, more effective treatments, and the emergence of a more contagious but less deadly strain of the virus.
