Cryptocurrency As Payment Option Not Anytime Soon, Says Amazon CEO

Amazon CEO says cryptocurrency won’t be added as payment option anytime soon

Amazon.com Inc. Chief Executive Officer Andy Jesse said in an interview with CNBC on Thursday that the e-commerce giant is no closer to adding cryptocurrencies as a payment option in its retail business.

But, he also said that it may be possible to sell non-fungible tokens (NFTs) on its e-commerce platform and that NFTs are expected to grow “significantly”.

NFTs, a type of digital asset that exists on the blockchain, exploded in popularity in 2021, with NFT artifacts selling for millions of dollars.

Jassi said that the cryptocurrency will get bigger in the long term, but added that he does not own any bitcoin.

A large number of companies have begun to accept virtual currencies for payment, leaving an asset class close to the mainstream until a few years ago by major financial institutions.

Last year, eBay Inc. allowed the sale of NFTs for digital collectibles such as trading cards, images or video clips on its platform, the first e-commerce company to tap into the frenzy around NFTs.

eBay also said that it is open to the possibility of accepting cryptocurrencies as a form of payment in the future.
