A weekend curfew may be imposed in Delhi amid rising COVID cases, sources said today after a meeting on the new restrictions.
A meeting of the Delhi Disaster Management Authority was held in Delhi to decide on the new restrictions. The surge means new restrictions under the colour-coded Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP).
With a positivity rate above 5 per cent for two straight days, Delhi faces “red alert” restrictions such as total curfew except for essential services, closure of non-essential shops, malls and salons and public transport, More restrictions on weddings and funerals.
Delhi has reported a rising positivity rate – the number of people testing positive for every 100 tests – with 4,099 new cases in 24 hours on Monday. The positivity rate in Delhi is 6.46 percent, which is the highest since May.
A “yellow alert” has been in force in the capital since December 29. Cinemas, gyms are closed and shops have been allowed on odd-even basis. Metro trains and buses can run only at half the capacity.
Top sources in the health ministry say that by mid-January, Delhi may see 20-25,000 cases a day and the number of hospitalizations may increase.
Top sources in the Union Health Ministry told NDTV that at the current rate of infection, Delhi could register 8-9,000 cases daily till January 8.
“By January 5, Delhi could have 20-25,000 daily cases,” said sources, cautioning against downplaying the Omicron surge.
