Odisha, Andhra Pradesh and adjoining areas have been put on alert in view of Cyclone Jawad, which is likely to form over the Bay of Bengal on December 3 and bring strong winds, heavy rain. According to the IMD, the cyclonic storm is very likely to move north-westwards, intensify and reach near north Andhra Pradesh and Odisha coasts around the morning of Saturday, December 4. Prime Minister Narendra Modi took stock of the preparedness, situation of NDRF, SDRF teams in a high-level meeting on Thursday. NDRF has already deployed 29 teams equipped with boats, tree-cutters, telecommunication equipment etc and 33 teams are on standby. The Indian Coast Guard and Navy have deployed ships and helicopters for relief, search and rescue operations. Units of the Army’s Air Force and Engineer Task Force are also ready for deployment. Disaster relief teams and medical teams are also ready on the east coast.

- In Bhubaneswar, Red Alert has been issued in 4 districts, Orange Alert has been issued in 7 districts for heavy to very heavy rainfall. IMD scientist Umashankar Das said on Cyclone Jawad that fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea from December 3 to 5.
- Wind speed will be around 60-80 kmph over Coastal areas near Bhubaneswar from December 4 afternoon onwards. The people of the affected areas should stay indoors. There is also a possibility of landslides in the hilly areas.
- IMD informed that the low pressure area over Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into Cyclone Jawad and it is expected to reach the coast of North Andhra Pradesh – Odisha on Saturday morning of December 4, 2021 with wind speed of around 100 kmph with.
- Due to this, there is a possibility of heavy rain in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh, Odisha and West Bengal. IMD has been issuing regular bulletins with latest forecast to all the concerned states.
- The Cabinet Secretary has reviewed the situation and preparedness with the Chief Secretaries of all Coastal States and concerned Central Ministries/Agencies.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs is reviewing the situation 24×7 and is in touch with the State Governments/UTs and concerned central agencies.
- The Ministry of Home Affairs has already released the first installment of SDRF to all the states. NDRF has already deployed 29 teams which are equipped with boats, tree cutters, telecom equipment etc. in the states and has kept 33 teams on standby.
- The Indian Coast Guard and Navy have deployed ships and helicopters for relief, search and rescue operations. Army Air Force and Engineer Task Force units, along with boats and rescue equipment, are ready for deployment. Surveillance aircraft and helicopters are continuously monitoring the coast. Disaster relief teams and medical teams are ready at places along the east coast.
