DA hike for central government employees: Dearness Allowance or DA is one of the most important parts of any employee, especially for those with government jobs. The central government can increase the dearness allowance of those employees, who can get some good news as a Christmas gift. According to the reports, under the 7th Pay Commission, these employees can get a further increase of 3 percent in their DA. However, there has been no official statement regarding this and the government has also not commented on it. Dearness allowance is generally increased twice a year, in January and July, and all employees are going by this trend to anticipate this increase.

1. The dearness allowance A hike is likely in January 2022, if the government maintains the trend and existing reports are to be believed. This will affect over 33 lakh central government employees, who are waiting for a hike in their salaries. The government provides DA to its employees in the form of cost-of-living adjustment allowance. This is also applicable for public sector pensioners. The allowance is provided to these individuals to balance inflation, which has seen a huge increase during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to a report by India.com, several public sector employees have urged the Center to increase the dearness allowance and clear their DA dues that were pending for more than one and a half years due to the pandemic. According to media reports, the central government is also contemplating to clear 18 months arrears of employees. According to the report of India.com, the Indian Pensioners Forum (BMS) has also written a letter to PM Modi asking the employees and pensioners to pay the arrears of dearness allowance and dearness relief.
3. The media has also reported that PM Narendra Modi is also going to have a meeting with the Cabinet Secretary on this matter on December 24, just before Christmas. Reports also suggest that a decision is likely to be taken after the meeting. However, the Center had earlier made it clear that it has no plans to clear DA dues to its employees due to the pandemic. But due to continuous pressure and requests from employees and pensioners, the issue of payment of arrears which are pending for 18 months is expected to come up. According to Money Control Hindi citing various media reports, the cabinet council has demanded that the DA arrears should be settled outright, while restoring the DA.
4. In a report, Zee Business quoted Shiv Gopal Mishra of the National Council of JCM as saying that the DA arrears of Level-1 employees range from Rs 11,880 to Rs 37,554. At the same time, DA arrears of employees for Level-13 (7th CPC basic pay scale Rs 1,23,100 to Rs 2,15,900) or Level-14 (pay scale) will be Rs 1,44,200 and Rs 2,18,200. respectively. If the Prime Minister gives the green signal, then the central employees along with more than 65 lakh pensioners will enjoy further associated benefits.
5. Till now, 31 percent dearness allowance is given to central government employees. The most recent hike was done in July and October 2021, following a month-long suspension of allowances due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Union Cabinet in October had increased Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief by 3 per cent to 31 per cent to benefit 47.14 lakh central government employees and 68.62 lakh pensioners.
