Some people are so fond of soft drinks that sometimes they consume it instead of water or even with water. As a result, this sometimes leads to addiction to such drinks. However, they are not the healthiest option, and while it affects your white teeth, what about our hair? According to a study published in the journal Nutrients, hair loss has increased over the years, and drinking too many sugary drinks may increase the risk.
Researchers from Tsinghua University in Beijing examined data from more than 1,000 Chinese men aged 18 to 45 between January and April 2022. During the research, they found that men who regularly drink alcohol. One sugary drink per day, such as soda, juice, energy drinks, sports drinks, and sweetened coffee and tea, was almost 30% more likely to experience hair loss (between one and three liters per week).
Men who reported drinking more than one sweetened beverage per day (about a gallon or more per week) had a 42% higher risk of experiencing hair loss than men who never drank sweetened beverages.
Most study participants drank at least some sugar-containing beverages as part of their daily diet, and more than half said they did so more than once per day, according to the researchers. But compared to men who didn’t report hair loss, those who did were more likely to drink more — about 12 servings weekly — than those who did.
The youngest men in the survey reported consuming the most sugar-sweetened beverages, which the researchers attributed to “a lack of awareness of the negative effects” of sugary drinks. Chronic diseases and death since the targets are too vague and remote for them,” the scientists said.
The researchers further concluded that drinking four to seven sugary drinks increased the risk of hair loss by 26%, while consuming one to three sugary drinks increased the risk by 21%.
In addition to hair loss, they discovered a link between sweetened beverage consumption and psychological well-being, which may feed a vicious cycle of frustration and anxiety that is exacerbated by hair loss.
Nutritionists and diabetologists recommend consuming sugary snacks and beverages in moderation and combining them with protein and fiber to balance blood sugar levels, even if a single food or drink is affecting your health or hair. There should be no possibility of making or breaking.
